Over the last 100 years, 90% of the Yarra lands have been cleared for monocropping agriculture which devastates soil health and robs native flora and fauna of their natural habitat. Carbon Neutral works with local people in developing sustainable systems that reintroduce native species back onto the land to improve soil quality, to build thriving ecosystems and create natural carbon sinks.
Sequestering carbon, generating oxygen, recreating the ecosystem.
“There is no doubt that we are in a climate crisis, and we have to address it, with the help of our wonderful supporters we have been lucky enough to plant thirteen and a half thousand hectares and counting, and we have a vision to plant 100,000 hectares, we are leaving something for future generations.”
The vision is to restore a forest corridor from the coast right into the heart of Western Australia. The corridor concept involves planting pockets of forest that form a continual trail where animals can transition through the landscape a lot more easily. It begins by planting up to 50 native species throughout a designated area to replicate nature and to suck carbon out the air. Over time, these man made native forests begin to take on a life of their own. Winds, animals and other natural vectors draw in a diverse range of seeds from other native species to these ready-made nurseries. These diverse systems have an inherent robustness, ensuring they grow and thrive for generations to come, free from intensive interference from humans wherever possible.
