How does AirWeave compare to an N95 mask in terms of protection?
N95 masks are certified by NIOSH to filter ≥95% of airborne particles down to 0.3 microns (PM0.3), based on particle filtration efficiency (PFE) only — they are not tested for viral or bacterial filtration. The AirWeave Copper Filter is independently tested by FDA-registered Nelson Labs to filter >99% of viruses (VFE), bacteria (BFE), and ultrafine particles at both PM0.3 and PM0.1, offering broader filtration performance in a breathable, reusable format.
What’s the difference between NIOSH N95 certification and FDA-registered lab testing?
NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) is a U.S. government body that certifies industrial respirators like N95s based on strict particle filtration and fit standards. AirWeave is not NIOSH-certified because it’s not an industrial respirator — instead, it’s tested at Nelson Labs, an FDA-registered laboratory that evaluates medical devices. Nelson Labs tests AirWeave for viral and bacterial filtration efficiency (VFE/BFE) and ultrafine particle filtration (PM0.1), using global medical mask testing standards.
In short: N95 is an industrial certification; AirWeave is performance-tested for real-world use with clinical-grade lab results.
Does AirWeave offer antimicrobial protection?
Yes — the AirWeaveᵀᴹ Copper Filter contains copper-infused nonwoven inner and outer layers, tested under AATCC 100 to deactivate >99% of bacteria. While the outer mask is not antimicrobial, the filter provides built-in protection.
Can I reuse an N95 or KN95 like I can with AirWeave?
No — N95, P2, and KN95 masks are designed for single-use (typically 8 hours max). AirWeave filters are engineered to remain effective for up to 20 days of wear, thanks to antimicrobial copper and advanced natural filtration. This makes AirWeave a more sustainable and cost-effective choice for daily use.
Is AirWeave suitable for medical use?
AirWeave has been independently tested by FDA-registered Nelson Labs for viral, bacterial, and ultrafine particle filtration, achieving >99% efficiency. However, it is not certified as a surgical mask or medical respirator, and is not intended for clinical or surgical use.
